Alsford are the largest independent Timber & Builder’s Merchant in the South East with Mill & Manfacturing Services available to Merchants and Retailers across England.
Pioneered from our ISO90001 accredited Mill in Erith, Kent, and building on a heritage established in 1882, we’re still true to our founders’ values of expertise and excellence in everything we do, supported by our extraordinary team.
Alsford also hold Investor in People, and have done for many years, with staff wellbeing at the forefront of our values. All of our team are offered appropriate training and support so that they can provide expert advice and services. We also make sure everyone is fully up-to-speed with the latest product, building and Health & Safety regulations including BSR.
Keeping our Mill & Manufacturing in-house also means we can apply the toughest quality control standards in the industry: our own.

Alsford own our own fleet of over 40 vehicles including inhouse Artic and HIAB offload services, covering timber lengths to 7.2m plus Engineered Wood Product i-joists and Heavy Building Materials.

Alsford History
Thriving since 1882, James Alsford began the Alsford Timber Ltd business selling timber and fencing in South West London, with our first retail branch location purchased in Twickenham in 1914 and still open today.
Successfully holding trade relationships through two World Wars and altering ecomonic conditions, the expertise and quality that were the core values of the Alsford family meant they maintained thriving relationships with regional and national housebuilders, and expanded the business holdings to include further retail locations and their own Wharf in East Sussex.
In the late 1980’s the Alsford Timber business further broadened their horizons through a transfer of ownership to the family-run Kingsbury Group and the subsequent further takeover of E Jones Ltd Timber Mill in Erith, Kent, forming the shape of the business you see today.
Those early branches, including Twickenham, remain in our network, firmly entrenched in the community that has grown as we have, to become the largest independent timber merchant in South East England, with 19 branches across four counties.
As part of the Fortis buying group Alsford benefit from purchase arrangements at national levels.
As a result, we're cushioned from seasonal supply variations with market fluctuations minimised, so you can rely on us to supply our whole range, all-year round. As well as a multi-million pound stock holding across our branch network, we have nine acres of storage onsite at our Erith Mill & Manufacturing centre, and bulk storage at our import holdings at Creeksea Port.
Alsford is also a member of the Builder’s Merchant Federation (BMF), the largest Building Materials trade federation in the UK, representing the industry to the highest standards.
Alsford holds Chain of Custody certification with both FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) and PEFC certification, alongside our Investors in People (IIP), the Fleet Operator Recognition System (FORS) and Logistics UK membership (formerly the Freight Transport Association).
